I think of a torta as a Mexican po-boy and I'm not used to that much richness and I usually don't deserve it. But when the craving hits, who's gonna stop ya? So where do ya go?
I've one good one and it's a new one, its called Torta Mexico. Sandwiched between a comic book store and the illustrious singles bar Re$iduals, Torta Mexico its on Ventura one block west of Vineland right near Universal. The enormous sandwich which feels toasty warm in your hands makes you feel like a little kid, but after one bite this is displaced by feelings of avocado guilt. I never let this stop me from finishing both halves, I mean two people could share but...
Torta Mexico fills the space formally occupied by a doomed and usually deserted Jamaican joint, but this place seems popular, especially with the gardening and landscaping crowd. Anything that drags them away from the hot truck cuisine they usually forego must be good and cheap, and this place is.
It's run by a family of women, who favor mayo but not handing out napkins so grab a couple extra when you pay 'cause they bring your torta to your table.
