why are my tomatoes going bad so fast?

I just bought fresh tomatoes at the farmers market yesterday morning and by the afternoon they were soft. Is it because I put them in the same drawer with onions? Do the onions give off something that makes tomatoes go bad? Is it because they're in a plastic grocery bag? Help!
