We're going to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kanazawa--will be in Japan for the first time, speak no Japanese.

I'm a bit overwhelmed (browsing through past Chowhound posts has me a bit going in circles, which says something about me, not the clear and generous post-ers.....).

Would be grateful for particular restaurant recommendations and general advice about food cultures.

We love food that is local, authentic, delicious.

We're not wow-ed by Michelin pedigrees.

We are happy to spend money for one really special (not showy or over-priced) meal in each place.

But we are also drawn to (eg.), a place that is terrific and a good deal at lunch or the weeknight favorite of food-lovers who live in these cities that isn't hyped by a guidebook or big-hotel concierge.

Many thanks!
