Tofu place on Mott below Bayard?

Rachel M. | May 15, 2003 10:17 AM

Last night I walked past a tofu shop on Mott St., below Bayard on the east side of the street. I didn't venture in, but out front they've got a small cart selling what they translate into english as something like tofu custard or soybean custard(I think the characters are those for tofu + flower). Chinese desserts are really popular in Tokyo now and since I never could bear waiting on line to get into one of the trendy cafes while I lived there , I thought I'd try some here. The small, at 75 cents, seems like a bargain, and for one person, it may be more than enough. The tofu itself seems to be just a very soft version of regular tofu, which they scoop out of a huge pot (still hot!), but you get a small container of syrup to put on it, adding a little sweetness. I was kind of tired and stressed out yesterday and it hit the spot.

Does anyone know what this stuff is actually called? Are there any other items at this shop worth trying? (The cart out front also has radish cakes, and there seems to be lots more stuff inside.) And, are there any other recommended spots in Chinatown to get tofu custard?
