Ok, this is going to sound silly, but I'm going to suck it up and ask anyway.
I would like to start cooking some different grains, such as quinoa, buckwheat groats and millet, etc. to mix up my usually brown rice routine. I plan to do this in my little 3-cup rice cooker.
I see that for many grains, some light toasting (4 mins or so) in a dry skillet is recommended before cooking.
Thing is, I am kind of scared to do this! I'm no pro chef. I only cook for myself. Is that ridiculous? What should I expect? Will the grains be popping? Are they going to jump out at me and hit me in the eye? Is it similar to popcorn, or will they just sit quietly in the plan and brown a bit, as I keep stirring them?
