After stopping in at Tita La Guanaca's tonight to grab some fast and tasty food from El Salvador, I feel compelled to share my find with Chowhounds everywhere. The restaurant is located on St. CLair Ave. West in Toronto, East of Dufferin on the north side under a blue and yellow awning. The menu is simple, a couple of typical dishes from the region, wicked french fries and rotisserie chicken. But it is the pupusas you must head out for. They are absolutely fresh, absolutley authentic, heavenly white corn tortilla's stuffed with a mixture of Cheese and Black beans, Black Beans or chorizo sausage. Having tried them all, Black beans and Cheese are number 1 followed closely by the straight black beans. They are served with a cabbage veg vinagrette spiced with oregano and a simple looking, great tasting, homemade tomato puree. But then there is the price - they are about $2 - $2.50 on a regular night, and two will do you nicely for dinner - 3 if you need to be stuffed. Tonight upon walking in I was overjoyed to learn about the slow night specials of Tuesday or Wednesday - during these time you currently get you your pupusas for $1.50 each!
There is seating if desired, or takeout. The decorations are simple El Salvador, but what is so esquisite are the constant smiles of the staff, the warm welcome and a feeling of being in one of the friendliest, most ernest-to-please, quality bargain neighborhood spots around.
