During Sonoma County Restaurant Week earlier this month, I made a point to try the $15 lunch at Windsor's Tisza Bistro. Located in the Holiday Inn Express, the restaurant has a coffee shop kind of plainness, but also a full bar. But no matter, the chef here can COOK.
The lunch deal started with a kale salad jazzed up with some crispy quinoa grains, plump wine-soaked currants for a touch of sweetness, shaved parmesan, a julienne of watermelon radish and a well-balanced honey-mustard dressing. The small size wiener schnitzel was the best version I've had in ages. Pounded to tenderness, but not too thin, just enough breading, and flavorful from frying in lard. On the side, a parsley'd boiled potato, lingonberry preserves and a refreshing cucumber salad that was not overly creamy. A squeeze of lemon brightened the schnitzel and the Sudwerk Southern pils on tap was just the right brew to wash it down.
The service was friendly and unpretentious. The specials board looked good. I'd like to return to try more.
