Giant squid are running off the California coast now. Great fresh local squid (caught offshore, not in the bay) is showing up in all the fish markets, and I've had offers of free squid from my fishermen friends who have caught it during the last week.
Now's the time to order squid dishes in your favorite seafood restaurants (and others that serve fresh fish). I've had it a couple of times during the last week, and both times it was great. Fresh and tender, with a burst when you bite into it. Not rubbery or chewy.
