First time to Kiriko...

...and I wish I'd taken my $45 to Sushi Zo instead.

Personalities of the sushi chefs aside, Kiriko's food just isn't even in the same stratosphere as Zo's.

Zo's fish is meltingly tender, obviously carefully selected from the best part of the fish. The aftertaste of each dish is sweet, sometimes with the lingering scent of the ocean. The blue crab handrolls, while tiny, are each a concentrated flavor packet. Sure, Keizo-san is curt, but I stand by my assessment that while stern he's not without a sense of humor (albeit an easily misinterpreted, odd sense of humor).

Kiriko, first of all, is way crowded, dark, and cramped. There are more menus available (cooked specials, fusion entrees) but we concentrated on the plain old sushi menu plus blue crab handrolls and were generally disappointed. The portions are bigger, the fish is good, but not a single bite was amazing. For the same amount of money a la cart at Zo, we were left stunned and impressed if not quite as full.

The plusses for Kiriko are that there are lots of dishes to choose from if you don't want just sushi (but again, I didn't try the entrees--are they good?), the sushi chef won't scowl at you, and there's the homemade ice cream (the honey sesame is lovely but no better than I could churn out at home, in all honesty).
