First time at Five Guys/L.A. transplant compares to In N Out

Spike | Jun 20, 200512:07 AM     15

First impression was very good. Some serious eats!

The burger is about on par with In N Out Burger. The meat tasted better and was more tender/juicer/flavorful, but it didn't have that wonderful hand-leafed lettuce and cheese texture combo you get with In N Out. Maybe I got the wrong toppings (which was basically everything except mushrooms). I ordered the standard cheeseburger, which I didn't realize came as a double. The bun at FG is also more flavorful and has a nice crunchy/toasty zing to it, which is missing in the blander, spongier In N Out counterpart.

The fries were seriously edible. I like the skin on/peanut oil flavor combo. Good quality potatoes. I think I prefer In N Out's to these, but they are a strong contender.

All in all a good substitute for a Cali/DC transplant and too close to call for a winner. There is even an echo of the red and white checker theme. A solid stand-in. I'm impressed!
