Has anyone been to the Brew and Bakery on Mercer St. I've never heard it mentioned. It looks like your typical NYU muffin and coffee shop generica but the owner(manager?) is a really nice Tibetan man who is really proud of the limited offerings in his shoebox of a shop.

Among the standard premixed muffins and the like he has baked empanadas in at least four varieties. I enjoyed the spicy tofu variety.

He also offers a Tibetan specialty called Shabales(sp?) in both beef and vegetable varieties. A giant dumpling of sorts. They have a bit of a fried dough flavor with a small disc of spicy ground beef in the middle.

This place is by no means a revelation but just a friendly place to drop in for a little something different than the usual stuff available to snack on if you're in the neighborhood. This place combined with Manna next door make for quite a pair of comforting yet somewhat transporting dining experiences.
