Thumbs up to Diamond Dairy

Peter Cherches | Aug 28, 200607:17 PM     11

I just had lunch at Diamond Dairy for the first time. It's one of those great Julius Knipl-type New York hidden gems. No sign on the street; you have to enter the jewler's exchange at 4 W. 47th, then you look up and the restaurant is on the mezzanine, with a picture window overlooking the diamond merchants. You walk up a staircase and enter an old-style lunch counter place with tables lined up along the window.

The food is excellent and cheap. Hot items are generally offered in two sizes. My friend and I had the excellent cheese blintzes and potato pancakes (2 pieces in a $5.50 small order), as well as bowtie noodles with cabbage. I grew up in a very assimilated Jewish household, so I never knew about noodles & cabbage, but my friend's parents were Eastern European immigrants and he grew up with the stuff. It was delightfully simple--sauteed, chopped cabbage with black pepper over perfectly chewy noodles.

The waitress was delightful too--the "nice" Jewish mother I never had.

I think this would be a great place to take a visitor.
