Hi... So I went into a Fresh Market for the first time today. Everyone has been raving about it, but I gotta say I'm pretty underwhelmed.
Now I didn't expect an experience equivalent to Whole Foods... I knew the store was smaller and more specialized, so the general dry goods stuff I was content with. I wish they had a slightly better cereal selection would probably be my only complaint there.
...but when I went to the produce section, I was absolutely dumbfounded with what I saw. 95% of the produce was conventional. There was clearly expired produce on the shelf as well. Except for the selection of lettuce and salad mixes, I was completely disappointed. The price was like Whole Foods, but the quality seemed like Pathmark or the "unfortunately located" Krogers or Safeways that don't get the same treatment as their top line stores.
Then I went to the Bakery section. The bread selection was ok, but nothing special. They seemed as obsessed as Publix with putting loads of transfats in their desserts which again I was disappointed with from a store that tries to sell itself as premium.
The real kicker was the meat department. I loved how nice they made everything look... But when I tried to inquire about the USDA rating of some of their "better" steaks (I was looking for prime or at least a higher end choice), the butcher on hand seemed to get really flustered and tried to tell me about how special and chosen they were. After rolling my eyes and pushing him some more, I finally got him to admit that they were USDA Select.... *Select!* My jaw literally could not drop any more with the price they were trying to charge for select steaks. If I wanted select, I would shop at Walmart.
I pretty much walked out at that point, not even looking at their prepared foods. I literally cannot believe people buy into what they are trying to sell...their entire store feels like a scam in pretty clothes.
Anyone else feel the same way?
