Thornton's IrishPub and Chop House El Cajon, CA

starkoch | Aug 11, 200705:35 PM     4

Today for about the 4th time in as many months, we've eaten at Thornton's Irish pub and Chop House http://www.thorntonsirishpub.com where we’ve had consistently good meals and good service.
Today we had the Surf and Turf. The shrimp were sooo good, they had a nice crispy light batter, I’m thinking it was tempura, nice and crunchy outside and hot and moist inside.

The steak is finished with their Jameson whiskey gravy. The steak is tender and melt in your juicy but not mushy. Today my steak knife ended up in the gravy and was a big mess. I ended up using my table knife to cut the steak, it went through it like “budduh.”
Fresh vegetables, usually zucchini and squash that are not cooked to death, they still have some “tooth” to them and if you are lucky, you will see a little bit of turnip in with them. Your choice of potato is colcannon or bubble and squeak. I’m not sure but I think they offer baked potatoes at dinner time. We’re usually in there for a late lunch, early dinner.
I have a hard time deciding between the colcannon and the bubble and squeak so I wait and see what DH (dear husband) orders and I order the other hoping he’ll share.
We also get an order of Irish soda bread. It's dense and oh, so, flavorful.

Like I said we’ve been there before so if you are interested here is what I posted on my blog about our last couple of visits.

Thomas Dowd is the executive chef, he was the chef at Hooleys Irish Pub in El Cajon http://www.hooleys.com before opening Thornton’s about a year and a half ago (maybe two years).

Next time you are out and about, stop by and lift a pint of half and half for me.
