Thomas Biesll Report (long)

Faren | Jan 17, 2003 10:16 PM

Ok so here's my report on Thomas Biesll. We went there tonight and first impressions are that it will be a good addition to the area. We were greeted very warmly by the staff and chef/owner and I noticed this was done with everyone who came through the door. He told us they'd been open for three days.He was also interested if people were from the area. The renovations were well done - some wood wainscotting on the walls, comfortable tables and chairs and the bar much better positioned than before. A more welcoming, cozy feel than in the old place. FOr just three days the staff and kitchen were incredibly efficient and this is important for a place which will rely on BAM goers (so if you need to make a concert, event etc. at BAM I think they can get you out on time ). To start I had oysters on the half shell- very sweet, fresh and a little briny - just the way I liken them. Husband had the eggplant terrine. Nice portion -layered with red pepper and with a kind of sourcrean/cream cheese top. Tasty. Entrees were cod fish topped with wild mushrooms, a wonderful brocoli rabe and parslied potatoes. COd fish again was fresh, lots of flavorful mushrooms. I had the weiner schnzitzel (sp?) served with potatoes and a side of cold, slightly vinergered cucumbers. The veal was really good. Lightly breaded and crispy outside and very tended and moist inside- not greasy at all. I liked it very much with those cucumbers. We also had a martini, a glass of good dry resiling, glass of sparkling Austrian wine and a coke. We shared a dessert; crepes with a nutella type filling whipped cream and chocolate sauce -yumm and quite enough to share. One espresso and one regular coffee. Total (before tip) $88.00. The only glitch in the entire meal was that the coffee was cold. I told the waiter who immediately apologized and came back 15 seconds later to tell me there was a fresh pot brewing and shortly thereafter returned with a hot and strong cup. In sum, considering the short amount of time it has been open, the food was not only very, very good but the service was excellent. Friendly and attentive but not intrusive. I would definitely go back there.I hope this portends a very promising beginning.
