We are a family of 4 (including 9 and 12 year old daughters) that loves to eat and plans our vacations around what we eat. We've never been to Spain and are trying to figure out an itinerary for the Feb "Ski Week" break my kids will have next year in 2019. I recognize it will be cold and the off-season in Spain, but most restaurants should still be open, right?
I'm thinking Northern Spain, maybe Basque country. We love meats, seafood, cheeses, breads, etc. I'm intrigued by the pinxtos culture. However, we would fly from SFO and it's a minimum 2 stop flight plus a moderately long drive to get to San Sebastian. Thus, I'm thinking of just going to Barcelona instead.
We are NOT people who stand in line for museums, historical relics, cultural shows, etc. Thus, the other attractions in Barcelona are less interesting to us. Our typical vacations tend to be leisurely and slow-paced with minimal activity other than getting great food (e.g., Maui, Mazatlan, San Diego, New Orleans, etc.). Yet with that said, we had a wonderful time in Montreal because we just explored the city instead of focusing on the "famous" attractions (e.g., browsing the public markets, popping into bakeries and deli shops, trying an escape room for the first time, taking a baking class). We never went to the Notre Dame Basilica, Mont Royal Park, etc.
Given the school break is only a week and I don't want to take them out of school more than 1 day, we also only have 7 full days there (ignoring the travel days). Thus, I don't think there's enough time to do Barcelona and San Sebastian.
I would love to hear from folks who also love to eat re: which area you'd pick!
