Thanksgiving 2017 Discussion

I hope I'm not duplicating! I just realized that 4 weeks from today is Turkey day!! I know I can't be the only one already pining about my menu.

My menu doesn't vary that much from year to year. Out of all our holiday menus, Thanksgiving is a time where my family craves their nostalgic favorites. But every year it is a chance to think about what went over really well, and what we could nix.

I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year for about 16 adults and 5 children. And with a little one of my own on the way, I'm feeling especially nostalgic. I would really like to add more gourmet flair, but this might not be the year.

We have a lunchtime Thanksgiving normally. So I don't usually prepare any apps, but a couple get brought.
My SIL always brings a chipped beef cheeseball + crackers. I admit I adore it.

Brined turkey
Smoked turkey (this is our first year owning a BGE and we are going to attempt to smoke a turkey. Unsure of recipe and whether to go with 2 breasts or another full turkey)
*really in need of a good, make-ahead, gravy*
Traditional dressing--cornbread, white bread, celery and onions, eggs, butter, broth. I've never liked it an apparently I'm not the only one. The trouble is it's been served for probably 90 years and there's a sense of loyalty to the recipe. My dad votes for Cracker Barrel dressing. There must be another way. I love oyster dressing but no way I can make just that.
Mashed potatoes made with real butter and heavy cream
Homemade noodles (if my husband can talk my MIL into them)
Roasted sweet potatoes with cinnamon pecan crunch (this will be a departure from typical sweet potato souffle + streusel) Will be interested in others' sweet potato options.
Cook's Illustrated Green Bean Casserole
*a brussels sprouts dish. Perhaps a hash
Cranberry sauce
Rolls (tbd homemade or storebought)
My great-grandmother's pumpkin pie recipe with fresh whipped cream (my husband's family is still in awe that whipped cream can be *made)
Grandma Ople's Apple Pie
Carrot cake roll (a new recipe I'll make if DSS will be with us Thanksgiving)
SIL cherry cheesecake (canned everything...not my favorite but it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it for my husband's family)
