new thai restaurant in old saybrook

new owners have taken over the star of siam resturant on rte. 1 in old saybrook(across street from cuckoo's nest, exit 66 off of 95). this is the 3rd incarnation of a thai restaurant at this site.the predecessors, little siam and star of siam, were both very good restaurants but succumbed to chronically weak patronage, particularly in the winter months. we had an excellent meal last night, including really great pad thai and pad ke mow noodles, tom yum soup, yum nur, duck choo chee and pad kra pow pork. the pad kra pow was the highlight of the meal; it's a humble dish, just pork, chilis, thai basil, garlic, palm sugar and soy sauce, but it was a perfect marriage of flavors. the preparation was identical to how the dish is made at sripraphai. i'm not sure if the chef cooked there but i did find out that his last job was at the fine new haven restaurant, thai pan asian. the owners will be changing the name and having a grand opening shortly. i urge all chowhounders to give this restaurant a try.
