Thai Kitchen instant soups

Ruth Lafler | Dec 18, 200305:45 PM     11

Okay, I've tried two flavors now, so apparently it's not a fluke: these are good.

Thai Kitchen Instant Rice Noodle Soup comes in packages like ramen, but they use rice noodles, so they're much lower in fat, and they don't contain any MSG or any other artificial ingredients. As an example, the ingredients on the lemongrass chili package are: Noodles (rice flour, water, tapioca), seasoning packet (lemongrass, onion, chili, lime, garlic, salt, pure cane sugar, citric acid, shrimp powder, tamarind and "natural flavor"), and oil packet (soybean oil, chili, garlic, shallot, vitamin E). They definitely don't taste overly salty or chemically (unlike most packaged ramen noodles).

More important, they actually taste good! I tried a Thai Ginger and Vegetable and liked it enough that I went back and bought the other flavors they had: garlic and vegetable, lemongrass chili, and Bangkok Curry. I tried the lemongrass chili today and it was also good, it even had a decent kick to it (if you look carefully the packages are labelled either "mild" or "medium" -- this was "medium"). Not only are they going to become staples in my desk drawer, but I can even see using them at home as a base for adding my own meat and veggies.

Oh yeah, they're 59 cents at my local natural foods store, so they are price competitive with ramen products.

Disclaimer: this product is being judged for what it is: an instant noodle soup product, not in comparison to fresh-made soups.
