Terrific onion rings at Old Town Bar

Caitlin McGrath | Jun 12, 2005 02:19 PM

The onion rings I had the other night at Old Town were the best I've had in a long time. They arrived very hot and crispy, and stayed crisp throughout the meal. They left only the barest sheen of oil on my fingers; not perfectly fried, but very close. They had a nice onion-to-batter ratio; the batter wasn't a thin coat, but didn't overwhelm the onion, like so many places' do. It was lightly spiced, not bland, but a good balance with the sweet onion inside. Each bite of ring brought coating and onion cleanly, with none of the all-too-common separation that leaves you holding an emtpy, hollow piece of fried batter. Absolutely worth the $1.25 to upgrade from so-so shoestring fries with your burger or sandwich, but I think I'd be happy to hang out with just a couple of drinks and a basket of onion rings, too.
