Terrific Dinner at Contra!--How do they do it for $55?

I've been interested in dining at Contra for quite some time, but have never managed to get it on my calendar. Well finally this past Friday I checked their website for the menu and reservation availability, and the stars were aligned with a great sounding menu and reservation availability. For $55 for five courses, it seemed like a great way to start the weekend. Service was friendly and attentive. Oh, BTW, I highly recommend ordering for a $3 supplement the delicious bread and butter.

The first course was a kohlrabi salad with walnuts and radish--very refreshing.

I received an extra course that wasn't listed on the menu I think because someone thought I had an allergy (I don't, but thanked my server): scallop with lamb broth and sake lees. This was delicious.

The next course was the listed monkfish with celeriac and horseradish. It was perfectly cooked, but I would have loved a more pronounced horseradish flavor.

The last savory course was the hanger steak with treviso and kumquats. The steak had great flavor and was so tender.

There were three desserts that were all winners: the palate refresher which wasn't listed on the menu: passion fruit sorbet, vermouth and sweet cream; frozen coffee parfait with Meyer lemon cream; and my favorite, popcorn mousse with mandarin orange granita.

I definitely plan to dine at Contra again!
