Tejuino at Town Burger in King City

Monday was Day 2 of AIDS/Life Cycle 11. As I did last year at this time, I drove down to King City to meet up with my friend for dinner. But before picking him up at the camp grounds, I did a slow drive down Broadway, the main drag, to see what was new and/or still open.

I was pleased to see that Huarache King was still in place.

Likewise, Paleteria La Michoacana seemed to be alive and well.

On the end of Broadway that’s closer to the freeway, Tower Burger opened 11 months ago, making it new to me since my last time in town. The owner is from Guadalajara. Besides burgers and smoothies, it has hot dogs and a menu of Mexican platillos and other specialties.

Besides being new, what drew me in for a closer look were the handwritten signs for “Tejuino”. When we went in to order one to-go, the counterman asked me if I knew what it was. “Yes, sir”, I replied.

Town Burger’s tejuino had less alcoholic kick but more intense flavors than others I’ve tried. Stronger taste of corn, more salt, bright with lemon and lime, and less sweet, this was served over cubed ice rather than crushed. This was one time I wasn’t concerned about violating open container laws.

We didn’t eat here, moving on to other spots in town for our meal. But things of note on the menu included mulitos de asada, $6, and tacos de rajas. Maybe another ‘hound passing through would please give ‘em a whirl.
