Will tea affect my baked goods?

I want to make an Earl Grey teacake, but only have a recipe for a plain poppyseed cake. Can I substitute the water with tea, or will chemicals in the tea affect the cake's ability to bake?

And in general, can I substitute tea for water in baking? If I can, it would be a great way to make breads and teacakes more interesting.
