My curiosity was piqued by a recent discussion about Tavern on Dean. Always interested in new options in Prospect Heights/Park Slope, I checked it out last week. While I don't usually order veggie burgers for dinner, I was intrigued by ep's words of praise for this item. The veggie burger arrived looking big and delicious--clearly homemade--but it proved to be extremely mushy and rather bland. It fell apart completely when I tried to eat it like a burger. The coleslaw was pretty tasteless as well. One of my companions ordered the cod cake sandwich, and was also unimpressed.
On the plus side, the fries were great, the service was fine, and the place has a nice, cozy atmosphere and convivial mood.
I'd have to rate it on the same scale as the Park Slope Brewery, maybe one or two steps above.
Interestingly, as far as veggie burgers go, I had a really delicious one recently at Tom's on Washington Ave. I'd never ordered off the lunch menu before! I asked for swiss cheese on top, which was melted on both halves of the bun (not the burger itself)in a most unorthodox fashion. It worked out pretty well though, and the coleslaw was also praiseworthy.
