I've been asked to move this over to this board. I'm looking for factories, breweries and the like that I can tour in NYC. Manhattan (where I'm staying) or the outer boroughs is fine and proximity to public transit appreciated. I'm looking for places that are akin to the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Factory in Berkeley or the Anchor Brew co. in SF, oyster farms, artisan cheese makers, etc.
I've searched on the interweb and haven't turned up much except for the Brooklyn Brewery and the Jacques Torres Chocolate shop. I hoping for more of a tour than what the chocolate place offers.
I'm coming from SF for a week next month. I've also been looking into visiting some of the large specialty markets and taking neighborhood specific walks. Any other ideas for food related activities? I'm not into being bused or schlepped around with a guide, but more things I can explore and do on my own. Thanks. C-
