Taste of the Nation review

sam | May 11, 2006 10:36 AM

received some passes as a gift to this event last night and went with the girlfriend...had a surprisingly good time.

very crowded but manageable, i ate a ton of food...most amazing dishes were:

craftsteak - tom collichio (sp?) was carving prime rib that was actually very tasty. he was incredibly nice and the meat was perfectly medium rare with a small bit of fat.

home - ive eaten here before but was never wowed...they had this duck breast that was absolutely excellent.

calle ocho - never been but their beef short rib on a bed of yuca was unreal.

les halles - this place gets little chowhound support but i always thought it was good. they had the most delicious pate that they were hand molding themselves...i had 3 plates of it...very, very good.

marseilles - some delicious crab concoction...very good.

employees only - their peach/bourbon drink was excellent.

other notables were dessert from blue smoke of sour cherries and vanilla ice cream, mini key lime pies from 11 madison park, yellowtail salad? from sushi samba, and this bacon skewer from dos caminos.

considering that i dont like steve hanson or danny meyer restaurants, the food was good. i can definitely see going to marseilles which you guys rave about and calle ocho which i never was interested in.
