A little while back I mentioned that I had noticed a new taqueria in Rogers Park with a sign out front advertising tortillas hechas a mano.
I went back today to check 'em out. Taqueria los malcajetes is just north of Albion on Clark, East side of the street. They seem to mainly specialize in huaraches and Tortas - in fact they may be trying to outdo tortas USA in offering almost unseemly amount of torta choices - 30.
I had a Torta Tatiana (Pastor, Pina, Jamon y Queson) and a taco to try out the tortillas.
While I waited for the food to get ready I was brough out chips and three salsas (in little molcajetes). Each of these was pretty tasty and fairly spicy - an orangish smooth chile based sauce, A very chunky pico de gallo that was more green than red from chopped chile, and a tomatillo salsa that was smooth from included avacado.
The torta was unfortuantely not in league with tortas USA/Dona Torta or for that matter taq. la oaxaquena, mainly due to much worse bread (and a little overuse of mayo). I was also disappointed to find the pineapple incorporated with the pork rather in grilled slices. However the taco (lengua) was pretty tasty and the corn tortillas were obviously fresh made and tasty, these were of the very thin variety.
Based on the this experience i think I'll go back and try one of the about 15 choices of huarache on offer.
they also a number of Platiilos which come with those tortillas and rice, though most everyone there was eating tortas (some other torta choices # 27 Chicken with Red Mole, #17 La Vicky - Smoked Pork Chop, ham & sausage)
