While bowling last night at Drake Bowl (a wonderful old bowling alley with beautiful curved wooden bar and new lane technology) stopped off again at Taqueria Los Gallos, which according to their menu is la unica in Chicago, so I don't think it's part of any other chain, etc.
Had the gordita with potatoes and cactus, which was outstanding, one of the most flavorful meatless things I've had in a basic Mexican restaurant. Also the pico de gallo salad, which is avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro, and chopped jalapeno dressed with lime and served on a plate of lettuce. Hot like you don't usually get without a warning, but that's fine with me. One of the tablemates had tears running down her face but kept eating it. I was eating the pickled jalapenos for a soothingly mild break from the pico de gallo.
Others had steak tacos, which were pronounced good and good value.
Drake Bowl is at 3550 W. Montrose, Taqueria Los Gallos is on the corner to the east of that.
