I really hate to give buzz to this place since its my local taqueria and it is getting difficult to get one of their 10 tables at prime eating hours but I figure I'll get it back in CH karma somewhere.
This place is the replacement location for Cabana after they lost their lease or had a rent bump in Davenport. I of course tried it right away but it just did not click. However, walking distance kept it in my rotation as an alternative to my Vallarta habit. Over time I really have grown to love their food and this is a regular stop for me. Vallarta is now a rare stop and usually when I want a carnitas burrito and happen to be going to Shopper's Corner. I suspect part of initial modest reaction to this place was it took a while to find the good stuff. The carnitas were very weak when they started (they have fixed this now!) and as I went through the toppings (cabeza, asada, chorizo, chicharon) nothing really connected. Finaly I tried the desebrada. WOW. Shredded beef sounds like such a boring generic easy choice but that is not the case here. Juicy, succulent tender braised beef with a pure meaty flavor that combines perfectly with toasted corn and salsa. The other key to this place is they are not shy with the chiles in the salsa (both fresca and the salsa verde). Unfortunatly, they do not alter their recipe in the winter so the jalapenos lose their punch. They are, at best, mid-spicy right now but once the summer starts you get a fairly big chile kick to balance out the richness of the meat. One of the other things I love about this place is that they do a good job of toasting the tortillas. In the pic you can see the brown spots on the outside where the tortilla has been well toasted. This can be inconsistent, in particular when they are hammered, but this is suck a key to good flavor and is so rare to find in town. Desebrada on the left and a Carnitas on the right. Check it out.
