Taqueria El Fuego - Richardson

After hearing about this place on the boards over and over again, we finally met some fellow chowhounders here for lunch on Saturday.

The reviews have been very positive about El Fuego, and I'll have to add another recommendation. I'm so used to tex-mex, that it was a real treat to taste more authentic mexican food. They offer a buffet on Saturdays with a wide variety of meats, beans, rices, and salsas. As others have mentioned, the tortillas are hand made in front of you.

I asked for a taste of everything on the buffet, plus I ordered a side of an huitlacoche quesadilla and zucchini blossom quesadilla from the regular menu.

I was most impressed with how the food wasn't overly greasy or salty, yet every item had a very rich flavor. The salsas were fantastic, especially the green ones.

The quesadillas were the most heavy items as they are deep fried, but they're small enough not to do crazy damage to your diet. The zucchini blossom version was a tad bland for me, but I loved the huitlacoche (corn fungus). That sounds gross, but it's really tasty. It's hard to describe the flavor. The best I can come up with is mushroom/corn/earthy/smoky.

The staff speaks excellent English, and were very eager to help in ordering off the menu.

The only problem for us is that El Fuego is really far from where we live. We live close to Maple Ave, so if anyone knows if there's anyplace near us that is similar....
