tapas at Masa

twentyoystahs | Feb 1, 2005 01:41 PM

Was once again VERY pleasantly surprised by a South end spot that I had previously decided was overrated & overpriced....met a friend last night for dinner - -we were going to head to Flux but they were closed (assuming they're closed on Mon nights?) so after taking a peek at the dollar tapas menu in the Masa menu, I decided to check it out.

First off, for a Monday night, the lounge/bar area was hopping. It's interesting b/c in the past when I've walked by Masa I've noticed how dead it always seems to be - - I couldn't figure out how they stayed in business. But they seem to have made a smart move with this dollar tapas seems to be working and getting people in the door. Plus, they're actually GOOD, so obviously that's keeping people coming!

First off, the tapas are really inventive. Cute little Southwestern twists on some favorites (like calamari) -- for a dollar each I came close to trying them all - -and each one was spectacular. Keep in mind, you basically get a bite or two for a dollar, but honestly, if you order about 10-15 of these between 2 people you'll get a variety of some really delectable treats. We had 1 martini, a beer, and an assortment of tapas and our bill came to $27. I am attaching a link of the tapas menu, and below are the ones we tried:

Guajillo Rubbed Sliced Steak And Guacamole (hmmm I don't remember the guacomole w/ this..but the steak was good and cooked rare to m/r, which is always a plus)

BBQ Chicken Skewer And Serrano Pineapple Salsa (loved this salsa, gave a nice sweet kick to the bbq chicken flavor)

Crispy Calamari and Avocado Wasabi (standard calamari but the avocodo wasabi was a nice twist)

Smoked Chicken Taquito (we ordered about 4 of these. A nice little blast of smoky mexican flavors)

Mexican Gulf Shrimp Ceviche (just as good as the tuna, but I like tuna better)

Ahi Tuna Ceviche (My favorite - really refreshing chunk of tuna with a burst of zingy lemony marinade. mmmm...served in a tiny little mini-taco shell =- sort a pinky-size version of those taco shells you see in taco salads)...

Most importantly, the bartender/server was really good. Very attentive, excellent service. I asked him some of his favorite tapas and he filled me in (chicken taquito and tuna ceviche were right on)...I feel for this guy 'cause he does a lot of work for dollar tapas, you know? But he was very professional and didn't even flinch when I ordered a club soda..I'm sure at those prices they'd like to get you in there to order a drink or friend made up for that tho ;)

I'll definitely head back there when I'm looking for some inexpensive, inventive bites.
