On a recent visit to the city, we were walking around looking for a cheap, comfort foodish place to eat and found the Tapas Lounge on 59th and 1st. The place is hard to notice because of all the dark grillework on the exterior and the darkened windows. Step inside and leave the city behind: no pretensions, no hipsters, just cool dark carved heavy Mediteranian upholstered divans and coffee tables with a smattering of interesting art and wrought iron on the walls.
We ordered a couple of drinks and a four tapas dishes from the menu for two of us. Veal meatballs in a light toamto sauce, blanched asparagus with melted monchegno cheese, lightly floured grouper baked with salt pepper and olive oil, and potatoes with spicy mayo. Great food all for about $48.00 with tip. We were stuffed when we left too.
