Tao Cafe review-(long)

Since there has not been a review for a good amount of time, I thought I would share my experience. The setting, as well as the service is good. It is a tranquil, southeast asian design and we sat at a nice table by the window. We ordered the "banh xeo" which was a vietnamese crepe stuffed with shrimp, chicken, and bean spouts. I thought there was a little too much coconut milk on the crepe, so it overpowered the other flavors, but it was generally good. The fish sauce was made well. My main course consisted of the "mi vit" which was a noodle soup with duck leg confit. This was one of the best "mi vit" I've ever had in my life. The only other comparable place was my trip to a small restaurant in Saigon, Vietnam last year. The duck was not marinated too long in the herbs, and the broth was very clean and balanced with level of saltiness which complemented the duck. We also ordered the alaskan halibut which was fantastic. I would say that this is one of the more authentic Vietnamese places in San Francisco. The food is good and the setting is very nice.
They have a special prix-fix which I think I'll try next time.
In any case, if you go, and you like duck, make sure you try the "mi vit".
