Tanto Japanese Restaurant, Sunnyvale

Heeding a recent tip that Tanto's San Jose-Saratoga chef had rotated to the new location, William and I stopped in last month. The Santa Clara branch has closed and moved further north to Sunnyvale across the street from Sawa Sushi. Most of the seating is on a tatami platform (with foot wells).

Ordering was a little touch and go when a couple of the dishes we wanted to try were not available that day. Also we learned that the clam ramen is a lunch only item.

Shown below are the two dishes that we didn't like. The crab gratin smelled wonderfully buttery rich and buttery when the sizzling dish came to the table. However, the bechamel sauce, crab meat, onion slices, and copious amounts of cheese was undersalted and had no flavor at all. William commented that the crab meat wasn't tough or stringy, and also shrugged that it wasn't tasty either. The grilled beef tongue was hit or miss. It didn't seem to matter whether slices were thick or thin, the tough vs. tender texture was random and mostly unchewably tough.
