Since moving to Bayside I have been learning more about Korean food and really enjoying the burgeoning Korean restaurant scene along Northern Blvd. Tang (196-50 Northern Blvd at Francis Lewis Blvd, 718-279-7080) opened recently in a sleek new building where the Ground Round used to be. It is a 24-hour seolleongtang joint, we love it.
A very limited menu, we have really liked everything we have tried. Seolleongtang, the rich beefy and milky ox-bone soup that you season with scallions, salt and pepper, and eat with awesome radish kimchee, is perfect late night after-drinking fare. The soup is extremely bland so you season it yourself. You can also get it with beef tendon.
The other main soup is yukgaejang, spicy (really not that spicy) vegetable, beef and tripe stew, also very rich, beefy and delicious. They have a really good japchae (mung been noodles with beef and vegetables), bibimbap, and several other dishes that we have not tried yet. Written English explanations of these "tang's dish" is available (abai soondae, wang jokbal, sooyook, bossam).
The other outstanding dishes at Tang are from the jeon bar, which unfortuantely is not running 24 hours but is available at dinner. These are the fried pancakes, but also individual jeon such as a plate of 5 oysters dipped in the eggy batter and fried on the griddle, or hot peppers stuffed with minced pork, or perilla leaf with a bit of minced pork folded in. These dishes are amazing, there are several others (kimchee, shrimp, mushroom, as well as larger pancakes).
The special radish kimchee is awesome, as is the "salad" that comes with the meal (napa cabbage leaf and a hot long green pepper to wrap it around, dipped into fermented soybean dressing).
Perfect place for a nighttime snack and a bottle of soju.
