Restaurants & Bars

Tampico opened this weekend on the corner of Charles and Biddle Street in Mt. Vernon. I have been watching them rehab the building for some time now and was really looking forward to the opening.

I went after work on Saturday, around 10:30pm (right now they are only open for dinner, but plan to do lunch in the near future). Great space, with high ceilings and lots of light. I started with their house salad. It had a lime-cilantro dressing with pumpkin seeds and avocado. The avocado was no where near ripe, I nearly chipped a tooth on one bite (not a good sign). The salad was very bland, as if the kitchen was saying "hey, but it was pumpkin seeds on it! It has to be good!" I then had the fish tacos. I love fish tacos except this version came with a nice layer of melted cheese. Fish and melted cheese? It didn't work. To top it off, it came with a side of guacamole. We were told that it was homemade (probably in response to our skeptic looks because it had that weird florescent green color) and were told it was made with "real avocado". Gee, I hope so. For dessert I had the squash with ice cream. This was the high point. It was rather tasty, but if all I wanted was ice cream, I would have gone to Sylvan Beach around the corner.

I heard that Tampico is run by the same people who own the Helmand, Bolton Hill Bistro, Tapas Teatro etc. My first impression was nearly identical that that of the Bolton Hill Bistro. They do a great job of building an attractive space and creating a comfortable restaurant but apparently do not have the capacity of hiring a decent chef.

Overall, probably a nice place to have a drink and do some people watching, but not the place if you are looking for a good meal.
