Tamales Liz | Rosarito, Baja California

Melanie Wong | Sep 5, 201812:32 AM     2

From Popotla where we struck out on buying any tamales de elote https://www.chowhound.com/post/popotl... , we continued south.

Near where we would return to the highway from the Carretera Libre (free road), an apparition, the bright blue façade of Tamales Liz appeared before us. Of course we had to stop and check out the tamale activity. Inside we found a rustic kitchen with tamale wrapping and steaming pots in action.

We bought one tamal de elote made with fresh corn first to sample at one of the small tables outside. Very tender and silky masa glistening with vegetable margarine and a natural level of sweetness when tasted hot from the steamer. Happy with this taste, we bought a dozen to-go that would be our breakfasts for the next couple days.

The tamales de elote turned out to be superior to the nuez (nut) and fresa (strawberry) ones. I'd buy the sweet corn ones again.
