Tamales @ California Street Market | Mountain View

This year's Christmas eve tamales came from Mountain View's California Street Market, recommended here,

The small corner store has a sign that says, "Tamales All Day". My brother says they're kept in a hot box behind the counter. I had a chance to try the pork in red sauce and chile & cheese. No elote available this time and chicken was also available. They're $2.26 apiece.

The masa's flavorful and the fluffy style. The pork tamale was tasty though the meat was somewhat stringy and could have used more sauce. The strip of green chile in the chile & cheese was not spicy.

The salsa de aguacate ($5 per pint) is excellent and very SPICY! Mostly tomatillos with jalapeños and serranos, and just enough avocado for a lush creaminess. It was just right to adjust the spice level of the tamales.

According to this article, the tamales are made at the family's other store in San Jose. The label on the salsa says "Mercado California" and has the same logo as this place,
