The family is from that wonderful area of the world known as sub-Carpathian Ruthenia. Once Hungary, once Ukraine, once the Austro-Hungarian Empire, once god-knows-what-else. And they enjoyed a beignet-like creation involving deep-fried dough and sugar--no filling. And they called it "straum," or something very much like that. The problem is that we can't find any language in that part of the world that calls the item anything remotely similar to 'straum.' Not German or Hungarian or Russian or Yiddish....
Does anyone know what I am talking about?
