Talavera Cafe & Bakery

In search of a pre-made dessert, I popped in to Talavera on Solano Ave. last night and bought the last 3 chocolate tamales ($3.00 each).

They seemed a bit firm to the touch, but I figured they would soften up after steaming at home. Nope, not a chance. The masa was tough and sort of dry and crumbly all at the same time, and almost completely lacking flavor. The chocolate was non-descript, perhaps chocolate chips?

The owner/baker mentioned she would have canelles (cannelles? pardon my spelling)today, but I have to admit, I'm a bit hesitant after my tamale experience. Any other reports out there?
