Taj used to be one of our favorite restaurants. But our most recent visit was a disaster on all counts—inedible food, outrageous price increase, and rudely unresponsive management. We will never go here again, and you should avoid this restaurant. In our disastrous visit, three of us had the once-famous buffet, and the fourth chose a-la-carte. To start the buffet we had Dal soup and Onion Bhaji. The Dal soup was so salty it was impossible to taste more than one spoonful. The onion bhaji was dried out and overcooked. Similarly, other buffet dishes were awful—dried out reheated tandoori chicken, bland spinach (saag paneer), unwarmed cauliflower and potato (alu gobi masala). The a-la-carte Lamb Vindaloo was reasonably spiced, but the meat inself was of mediocre quality. The traditional dessert of fried condensed milk, honey, and flour balls (gulab jamun) were hard as rocks. When we complained to the manager (whom we recognized from past visits) he initially refused to even acknowledge our complaints, saying no one else was complaining so we must be wrong! The only other customers were a large Japanese family (who, by custom, would never complain publicly about anything) and a few couples who were seated after us. Eventually, the manager (or his chef) agreed that the Dal soup was inedible, and cooked up a bland replacement batch. But no apologies, and not even any acknowledgement of the other food issues. I suspect this restaurant no longer has a chef, but only heats up prepared products from Sysco or some other mass distributor. And, to top the evening, prices had been raised outrageously since our last visit. In summary, the worst Indian restaurant experience we have ever had.
