Has anyone here read Jennifer 8. Lee's book "The Fortune Cookie Chronicles"?
One chapter focuses on her obsessive search from New York to China and Taiwan for the source of General Tso's chicken, and she eventually tracks down the old former New York Chef Peng who created the dish. He's settled now in Taiwan, and she eats a dish of his original General Tso's chicken at his restaurant, which is called 左宗棠土雞 (or translated into English as "Chicken a la Viceroy")
To be fair, she prefers the US version. However, if anyone is familiar with the location of the restaurant she refers to in the book, I'd love to check it out during an upcoming trip to visit the family.
