Last Taco Loco CH thread I found was 2008, but the Globe's recent feature put it on the docket for late lunch yesterday.
Steak on the Tacos- was flavorful but chopped tiny, and not a lot of it. The pork filling was well flavored but very dry. Chicken 'Empanadas' were a thick crescent shell of rather leathery masa with a ground chicken mixture inside; deep fried. Masa shell was tasty but tough; filling was WICKED salty(Saizon, I suspect.) Guac was meh; used real avocado but too much onion, salsa, thinner.
Sweets were all really good. Flan dense and creamy and a large piece. The famous beverage, Atole , was like a thick hot very sweet corn milkshake. I experimented with it to cut the sugar; I added green tea powder to one batch, and instant espresso powder to another. This was a neat discovery. You can see how filling and satisfying it would be on a chilly day.
In comparison to Taco Loco, today's late lunch from Tenoch- was a revelation. I hadn't been there in quite a while and it has really improved since their early days. I tried 3 different tacos. The carne asada was very freshly prepared, savory and moist (but not like it had been sitting in a hotel pan of juices)and cut into appropriate size. It was also surprisingly generous- like 4x more than on my(one) visit to Taco Loco and Naco Taco. I tasted all the salsas and while I much preferred their Chile Verde sauce to any of the red ones, they were all pretty good/ nothing egregious. The Pork Adobo was stewed and shredded in a robust chile sauce. Their Taco Pastor stuck out as their weak spot imo- dry, and meh flavor.
The Guacamole was quite the surprise home run. Buttery simple pure ripe avocado, not thinned or pureed/ ruined in a food processor, but mashed and some chunks with just a touch of tomato and onion. WOW!
The thing that really struck me at Tenoch was the Variety of fillings they offer. There are specials not listed on their website, and there are maybe TWENTY filling options. The Boston Mexican community must be thrilled. When I arrived at 5pm I was the only one ordering, but when I left at 6PM there were prob 12-15 guys in line. The very welcoming bi-lingual(at least) counter woman w/ braces was friendly and helpful. She set a cheery tone that the food certainly followed through on. Tenoch has received lots of CH raves the last year or so, and now I see why.For many of their items, they must be blowing the competition out of the water.
