Today I finally pulled over to check out a cute taco wagon that I've passed by for a few years.
Tacos Juanito is brightly painted and has a canopy and a table with chairs for eating on the spot.
And I was delighted to learn that its a OAXACAN kitchen.
The menu includes tlayudas and enchiladas made with mole oaxaqueño.
The enchiladas, $7, were wonderful. Very thin and delicate corn tortillas bathed in complex mole coloradito, filled with chicken thigh meat asado, and topped with a blizzard of queso fresco, cilantro, white onions and crema.
And I couldn't leave without trying the tacos, $1.25 apiece. Cabeza (head) on the left and cachete (cheek) on the right, this was a rare opportunity to taste these two meats side-by-side. The cachete pieces were firmer with more chewy gristle. The rich beefy taste was about the same. The salsa was sort of generic, and radish slices and lime were provided on the side. The tortillas were great with toasty corn flavor and coarse stone ground-like texture. They were sweated without oil to be soft and flexible. I liked them so much, I asked the cook the source. They use Hayward's La Mexicana. http://www.chowhound.com/post/fresh-m...
And Tacos Juanito has its own parking spaces that are shaded in the afternoon.
I took note of what my seatmates at the communal table were eating with gusto. One man had three carne asada tacos and one al pastor with the cilantro, onion and salsa on the side. He distributed the al pastor marinated pork on top of the asada tacos, and then dressed them with the garnishes. The man on the other side of me had chunks of fresh tomato strewn over his taco plate. Good to get some ideas for what to ask for next time.
