Just wanted to thank those of you who have recommended Tacos Baja Encenada on this board. I went for lunch for the first time today with a couple of friends, and had absolutely the best fish and shrimp tacos I have ever had. The fish and shrimp were fresh and piping hot, right out of the fryer and were topped with shredded cabbage, crema, and wonderful fresh salsa with just the right amount of heat. And, in contrast to most fish taco places I've tried in LA, the tortillas were perfectly soft and chewy -- don't know if they were homemade, but they tasted like it. Lunch for three (consisting of three tacos each, rice, beans, and three medium drinks) came to $18, plus a couple of bucks for the tip jar. It's about a 10-15 minute drive from downtown, but the service is quick, and it's doable in an hour long lunch. (Unless of course you stop for fresh baked Mexican pastries on your way back, in which case you'll need an extra 10 or 15 minutes...) This place is a gem, and I will definitely be back.
