Wow! Chowhounds should flock to this place on Columbia Rd near Adams Morgan. It bills itself as an authentic mexican place (i'll let others judge if it's true). In addition to cakes, buns and pastries available from the bakery cases (you take a metal bowl and tongs from the cart near the door to select the goods), there is a good-sized menu of tacos, burritos, tortas, and other mexican specialties like menudo, pozole, to name a few. they also make a yummy horchata. We went a little overboard and ordered the sopes (corn tortilla slathered with refried beans, queso, cilantro, onions), a beef and rice burrito served with chips (around $6), a torta carnitas (large $9) and oaxacan style tamales (3 choices, we chose the chicken mole, $3.50).
The sopes are just ok. The beef and rice burrito good, but the tamales and torta carnitas were great. The large torta is more like 2 sandwiches (about 10 inches long and 4 inches wide)- the carnitas was luscious fatty tender juicy pork in a sandwich (good bread) with lettuce, tomato, jalapeno, mayo, avocado. huge. the tamale was also substantial, wrapped in banana leaves, with a lot of meat (chicken slathered in dark mole sauce).
There is a salsa/peppers bar with 3 types of salsa, 2 green and 1 red. all medium to hot. they also have pickled jalapenos and carrots.
i can't wait to make my way through the rest of the menu.
