If you don't know already, you should be aware of a new taco joint in the old part of the Farmer's Market at 3rd and Fairfax. It opened two weeks ago, it's called Loteria, is owned by a former ad guy who grew up in Mexico City and is trying to make good food with flavors he grew up with. I'm told his family runs some restaurants in Mexico. The tacos are really good. The tortillas are made by hand right there by some middle aged Mexican women. I've been there twice this week and will keep going back. I've had the shredded beef taco, which is great, intensely seasoned, my fave so far. There's also a really comforting rajas y papas taco, that they put some diced white onions and tomatillo salsa on it. The shredded chicken w chorizo and chipotle is less interesting than you'd guess from the name. The cochinita pibil taco is pretty great, it comes with pickled red onions on it. Fine stuff. Last time I was there, a crew of construction guys was sitting at the counter eating lunch; it was a mix of mexican-americans and some white folks. Everyone of them was digging the food. One mexican guy had a refill of the hibiscus agua fresca and said "this is a real thirst quencher. You know, I grew up around hibiscus."
