Tabla: a mixed review

I recently moved to New York, and my first weekend in town, I decided to try the Tabla bread bar with my girlfriend. In all honesty, I wasn't blown away by the food (samplings of different breads and chutneys, some small plates), neither the quality nor the innovation. It was decent, but based on the prices and rep, I was expecting at least one or two "wow"-worthy items.

The drinks, though, were home runs. My girlfriend had a mango daiquiri and I had a tamarind margarita; the sweetness of the mango was perfect, and my margarita was incredible! The tamarind flavor and the sugary rim were a great complement to the tequila. Also good (maybe not home runs, but at least ground rule doubles) were the service and ambiance. It's definitely a cool place to hang out, and the waitress was patient and attentive to our various questions. Basically, Tabla's bread bar a great place to go have a couple of drinks and feel the vibe, but I think that if you go there solely for a tasting experience, you may be disappointed.
