Szechuan peppercorns: a problem

So, I got Szechuan peppercorns per a recent discussion on the Pacific Northwest message board). Ground some up in my small, clean coffee grinder - used some and left some in the grinder with the cover on. A week later, there's mold growing on the ground pepper.

This doesn't happen with any other spices. Any explanation for this?
