Went to dinner at the one-week old Szechuan Gourmet last night and it was excellent. It is a branch of a restaurant with the same name in the Chinatown section of Flushing, Queens and has pretty much the same menu. Fortunately, it also has pretty much the same flavor, namely extremely spicy with liberal of use of sichuan peppercorn. They certainly didn't tone things down in their move to midtown. This is a great addition to manhattan and in my opinion surpasses wu liang ye and the grand sichuans in food quality and "tastes like in chengdu"-authenticness of preparation. Had the spicy cold beef tendon, sichuan pickled vegetables, and crescent pork dumplings in hot oil, as appetizers. for main course we had "ants climbing a tree" minced pork with cellophane noodles, and the super-spicy "water-boiled beef". All dishes well very well prepared and super flavorful.
